Sound Advice & General Tips for the New Pit Bull Owner:

  • We feel these dogs need constant supervision with other pets. As this breed matures, they can become very dominant over other pets and accidents can happen. To avoid them , make sure when its still a pup, never leave him/her unsupervised with an adult dog ( we have seen jealous adult dogs maul pups before), and when its growing or grown, please don't leave your dogs alone together, no matter how well you think they get along. Just a little word of advice from folks who know this breed. They were bred to win and compete for hundreds of years, and it is in their blood ( no matter what they say, its not always "how you raise them"). We have seen many lose a dog or two because of poor supervision. If you must have 2 pits inside together, make sure they are the opposite sex, and still separate them when you're not home. This also goes for dogs raised together, or mother to pup, father to pup, etc.

  • Invest in a breaking stick and learn to use it.

  • We also recommend good chew toys, like large, hard natural bones, Hard Jolly Balls, Bowling balls, Nyla-bone products are the very best.. our favorite is the NylaBone "Galileo"...They are practically indestructible! Get toys that cannot be easily chewed up and swallowed. We don't recommend any rawhide products, studies show some product of this kind contain formaldehyde .

  •  Another reason we are against rawhide is that the dog will try to swallow the rawhide whole at some point and can easily choke to death or eat it and it can cause intestinal blockage. It happens often to this breed. We have actually had to save a few dogs lives by pulling the rawhide out of their throats to clear the airway. Its been many years, but we have sworn off rawhide products, Its just not worth losing your dog.

  • Very young pups enjoy having a towel or rag or cotton rope hung from a fence or something high up, they will shake and work on the towel for fun. Get ready to see it shredded!

  • Keeping plenty of safe toys around will probably save your furniture, walls, blinds and floors from being eaten. :-) Remember if or when something gets eaten, please don't put all the blame on the dog, its partly your fault for not crating your dog when he isnt supervised or having sufficient chew toys for them. For this reason, we suggest not letting any dogs have the run of your house alone under the age of 2 years. Invest in a good crate,  dog pen or chain set up ( all pits should have a good swiveled chain set up, we think!).
